“Love, Your Favorite Uncle Anthony” is a short documentary about aging with Down syndrome, focusing on my Uncle Anthony who is a 50-year-old man with Down syndrome. As the Director & Producer of the film, it is my sincere hope that it brings attention to a critical issue: people with disabilities, such as Down syndrome, bring so much light into the world. We must do everything we can to support them and ensure a brighter future for them.
Film Synopsis:
Since the 1980s, the life expectancy of individuals with Down syndrome has more than doubled, rising from 28 to 65 years. As these individuals live longer, it is having a profound impact on their caregivers and communities. Many will outlive their parents and rely on the next generation of family members for care. Additionally, as they age, signs of Alzheimer's Disease are emerging around the age of 40. This new reality represents a frontier that demands medical research, attention, and dedicated care.
Anthony lives a rich, fulfilling life thanks to a strong and loving support system. But as he grows older, we are left to consider what the future holds for him and other people like him. Despite the challenges, Anthony remains blissfully unaware of the hardships ahead. His natural innocence, curiosity, and love shine through - with his 50th birthday wish being a trip to Disney World. The piece captures the poignant contrast between his aging body and mind, and his enduring, child-like heart.
